Loss and damage have moved forward but with marginal impact to the lives of people. Existing mechanisms from the international climate regime have not been structured to guarantee human rights, and their funding is completely deficient. International courts have raised the bar to the discussion of loss and damage with a completely different paradigm of what justice must look like for harmed communities. Loss and damage violate human rights and repairing this harm is a state legal obligation. Providing national and international mechanisms to access justice is part of the climate debt that is owed. The path to work together is set and goes beyond the FRLD and the Santiago Network, to real funding, accountability, responsibility and the duty to repair. However, the push for loss and damage justice, needs collective effort and support. The disappearance of financial support threatens the work on loss and damage and a false sense of achievement can also decrease our activism.

We will hold a partnership building event to fight for loss and damage justice together. In this space highlight the collaborative work on loss and damage in Central America led by La Ruta del Clima, with the support of Oxfam and Bread for the World. Let’s join this community in Bonn.
