Costa Rican climate and environmental governance has experienced significant changes in the last year. In the last year, Costa Rican civil society has witnessed the derailing of the ratification of the Escazú Agreement, the cancelling of the Green Climate Fund electric train project, dozens of formerly protected marine species included into the list for commercial exploitation, the active lobby and support to gas exploration, the lack of access to information on environmental matters and the reduction to an absolute minimum of the Direction of Climate Change. These harsh political deviations have been taken amidst an increase of violence, inequality and economic inflation in the country. The government answer has been efforts to privatize public institutions, weaken democratic institutions, threaten journalists and deregulate environmental safeguards s. A violent, patriarchal, and populist agenda seems to dominate the current administration approach to govern placing environmental democracy in a dire context.
